Distance learning materials for professional body
When
the Chartered Institute of Purchasing and Supply (CIPS) – the
international examining and professional body for purchasing and supply chain management – introduced a new qualification scheme, it required a complete
set of supporting course materials for students.
Following
a long tendering process – as thorough and rigorous as you would expect
from purchasing and supply professionals – Wordhouse was appointed to
develop and produce a new programme of learning materials.
In
total, CIPS commissioned 17 course books, each 350 pages long.
Academically, the level of study ranged from the equivalent of A-level
through to postgraduate.
Over 18 months, the Wordhouse publishing team produced all 17 course books in both print and web-enabled formats.
Wordhouse
proposed and agreed the overall structure, approach and instructional
design with the client, including a comprehensive house style, then
commissioned and managed a team of authors and technical reviewers
through to project completion. Management of the production process at
all stages – including instructional editing, copy-editing, design and layout, proofreading and indexing right
through to press-optimised PDFs – was tightly controlled to ensure
on-time, on-budget delivery.
To
ensure the longevity of the materials, Wordhouse created them using a
sophisticated content management system. Materials were stored in XML,
ready to be adapted, revised or updated and published to the web as
required.
Why Wordhouse?
Robert
Vine, who oversaw the project for CIPS, found Wordhouse’s approach
thorough and responsive. He says: 'The Wordhouse team was very
methodical, and always extremely helpful. Overall, the project
management was most impressive. This was the first time the CIPS had
attempted to produce a complete set of course materials at one time. The
response from students has been very favourable.'
